Waltham Community Members Enjoy 8th Annual Fall Festival

More than 500 people (our biggest crowd yet!) came out on Saturday to enjoy free food, music, and activities at the 8th Annual Waltham Neighborhoods Fall Festival, hosted by REACH Beyond Domestic Violence and the Waltham Library.

Attendees participated in a yarn game, water balloon toss, scavenger hunt, face painting, crafts table, and a community art project depicting what makes Waltham a great place to live and work. (Special thanks to the students from Waltham High who designed and led the art project!) The police and fire departments were there, and everyone enjoyed entertainment from the Diamond Family Circus, children’s musician Jeff Jam, the band “Guy,” and musician Adam Sickler. Ann Callahan led us in a 30 minute Zumba session to get us up and moving. One of our volunteers offered free bike repair, and thanks to the generosity of our many sponsors (listed below) we were able to offer raffle prizes as well as a prize for the scavenger hunt winner. The photo booth was back, and many goofy pictures are sure to surface in the weeks to come thanks to this beloved tradition! Roving volunteers with “selfie frames” added to the photo-fun.

Community Art Project: the finished product!

It was a day of fun with a serious purpose – read more about why we do it in last week’s blog – but with sun shining, the scent of hot dogs grilling in the air, and water balloons popping amid peals of laughter, it definitely did not feel serious!  “What I love most is the warm, friendly, community atmosphere,” says Festival Coordinator Debora Hoffman, “that’s what makes it different, and that’s why I think it keeps growing every year.” Pretty soon it will be time to start planning for next year’s festival, so to get involved, contact our Prevention team for more information
