REACH Holds Record-Breaking Gala Fundraiser

On Saturday night, October 14, REACH Beyond Domestic Violence held its 14th Annual Reach for the Stars gala at the Intercontinental in Boston. More than 300 guests were in attendance at the event, which featured a cocktail hour with silent auction, then a seated dinner and program hosted by emcee Robin Young of WBUR radio.

Young introduced REACH Executive Director Laura Van Zandt, who spoke about October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and about REACH’s theme for the month of “Creating Space for Change.” She said: “This night is about creating space to come together and shine a light on an issue that is too often kept in the dark. Tonight we are creating space to celebrate the hard work we are doing together and to commit to the work that needs to be done. Together, we are creating space for healthy relationships and communities.”

Attendees also heard from Patricia, a member of REACH’s Survivor Speakers Bureau, who shared her story of escaping an abusive marriage with help from REACH: “Today, I stand here as a free woman, free from the verbal assaults on my character, the manipulation and psychological games and I have the ability to sleep in my own bed without fearing for my life. I am still attending support groups at REACH and connecting with my advocate Jenna. She has been a true blessing to me and my kids. My feelings have been validated and affirmed by Jenna and all the REACH staff I have encountered to date.”

A live auction featuring one-of-a-kind travel and entertainment packages, and dancing followed.

The evening raised a record-breaking $470,000 to support REACH’s programs and services.  We are grateful for the support from sponsors, auction donors, event guests, and our event committee – we couldn’t have done this without your generosity.
